Down to the 18th hole

A battle went down all over Winthrop Gold this weekend. Sure, Paul McBeth completed his grand slam of all 5 PDGA majors but that and the United States Disc Golf Championship was small potatoes. The rematch of our CSU Rams and the Augusta Jaguars for the Dean's Cup championship was what we really wanted to hear about.

Club president Connor Mitts teeing of on Hole 5 of Winthrop Gold
Reading the tweets for the Dean's Cup Championship was a lot like watching the ball bounce back and forth in the Atari game Pong. Augusta went up, then CSU tied, then CSU went up and Augusta came back. Hole 17, a par 3 where it's not uncommon to see a top pro take a 7, CSU took a double bogey 5, but Augusta took a triple bogey 6. All tied up.

Hole 18, a par 4, is anything but easy. The tee pad is on the lake, forcing a first shot over water. The fairway has a more than gentle slope leading down to the lake. The basket is guarded by a narrow strip of out-of-bounds, a dog leg left, and an incredibly fast, lake-ward sloping green. It was on this hole that Augusta would take revenge for last years defeat, carding a par against our Ram's bogey.

Weather the day of the championship match was less than favorable and it would have been only too easy for one of the competing teams to let the monster that is Winthrop Gold get the better of them. The fact that the scores remained so close throughout the round demonstrates the quality of the players of both teams. On behalf of the CSU disc golf team we offer our congratulations to Augusta University as the 2015 Dean's Cup champions (we'll see you next year!) and express how proud we are of Connor Mitts, Dylan O'malia, Sean Gray and Maverick Robertson for achieving a second place finish!

CSU in Dean's Cup Championship Match!

Embedded image permalink
That's club secretary Maverick Robertson top right!
Our boys are doing some work right now in Rock Hill, South Carolina. As part of the Dean's Cup, teams play head to head with other college teams on one of the most famous courses in the world of disc golf, Winthrop Gold. Our Rams faced off against the Winthrop University Eagles while South Carolina took on Augusta.
Club vice president Dylan O'malia was able to make a shot from about 120 feet out on hole 6 and club treasurer Sean Gray hit some huge putts to end up 2 under par for the round.
The Eagles couldn't keep up and ended their round 4 over par. The Augusta University Jaguars went 4 under par and put South Carolina behind them, securing a rematch with CSU. Last year our Rams won the Dean's cup by defeating Augusta, and we know they can do it again in 2015!

First Tryout Courses Confirmed

We have confirmed our first tryout date on 10/18 and will be playing Bear Mountain in the morning and Conifer in the afternoon!

Both are amazing mountain courses, but that comes at a price. These are both pay to play courses, so we will be discussing the fee per player at or before practice on 10/14. Be ready for a full day of disc golf where our total hike will likely be over 5 miles with tons of up and downhill at 8300 ft of elevation. Make sure to bring good shoes, plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and anything else you think will give you an edge over the competition (within the law, of course).

More course information will be posted soon on the Tryouts page under Tryout 1. There will be no map for Bear Mountain as things constantly change at that course. Carpools and lunch plans will be discussed along with fees.

Most Importantly, you will not be allowed to try out if you have not paid your club dues! Each club member trying out for nationals has a total of 4 rounds that can be dropped, the more rounds you play the better off you'll be!
